Elokuu meni kuin siivillä. Oli ihanaa tavata sukulaisia ja tuttuja sekä nauttia Suomen upeasta kesästä. Nyt olen jälleen maratonilta tuntuvalla kotimatkalla. Tätä kirjoittaessani Lontoossa, hädin tuskin neljännes matkasta taitettuna. Odotettavissa on kalseita odotustiloja, selittelyä seitsemästä ylikilosta ja nilkkojen turvotusta. Perillä odottaa kuitenkin kolme iloista pientä ja yksi iso, jotka ovat innoissaan saadessaan äidin takaisin.
Mukaan matkalaukkuun on pakattu paljon tuliaisia, veneenkunnostustyökaluja ja -materiaaleja sekä paljon Fazerin suklaata ja kunnon suomalaista suolaista salmiakkia. Eiköhän näillä pärjätä!
Riutan kalat ja äyriäiset odottavat.
Kun on pitkään vääntänyt väitöskirjaa etätyönä kotona, neljän seinän sisällä, on tullut vähän erakoksi. Muutenkin tietysti ystävät ja sukulaiset ovat olleet kaukana. Nyt olen ahkerasti käynyt kyläilemässä ja saanut ihania kutsuja joka paikkaan. Ja harmillista, etten kaikkia ystäviä edes ehdi tapaamaan. Tästä sosiaalisesta hyökyaallosta on ihana ammentaa ja jättää varastoon tuleviksi kuukausiksi.
Uutisissa oli eilen, että Uudessa Seelannissa luodaan lunta ja kylmyys koettelee jopa Aucklandiakin. Miten se sitten sattuikaan, että pääsin nauttimaan Suomen ihanasta lämmöstä ja auringosta juuri sopivaan aikaan. Huomasin myös viikonloppuna, että on taas täysikuu. Se sama kuu, joka valaisi viimeksi meidän yövahteja matkalla Uudesta Seelannista Fidzille.
NANEA is ejoying nice weather in Mamanucas. We anchored in fron of tiny and unhabited Mociu Island. Island is just north of the Castaway resort in Qualito Island. Otso was especially happy. Kids went to shore by canoe waving their wooden swords. In 15 minutes the island tresures were harvested. We cut open four green coconuts for their milk and kids instructed me carefully how to make a proper straw from native “hay”.
The reef was friendly and beautiful. Home daddy got one mullet and a grouper for our lunch. Our fishing canoe is not so fast but good for spear fishing. It is very stable, easy to drag along and has enough room for the fish bag and fishing/diving equipment.
During the fish cleaning operation three adult humpback whales entered the lagoon. These majestetic marine mammals are wondeful to see. I was wondering why they did not seemed to have calves with them – maybe they were males looking for fish in herd. However, local boys we chasing them with fishing vessel and we did not had a safe change to see if they would like to meet us. Sometimes a torpeedo would be essential equipment in a yacht.
Afternoon, fast boat arrived and let a croup of human females and males on shore. Our kids lost their interest about island and we decided that tommorrow we sail further. Possibly we will sail to monoriki island where Tom Hanks filmed a movie talking with his volley ball. I think the movie was called Castaway? Present day he could have chatted in facebook with all his friends and spent lots of money for transmission costs.
It is amazing how much western tourists these islands have. Where are all those 4 million Chinese whose yearly income is larger than 23 million USD or all super fast Chinese swimmers? Most propably they are at work (as we should be ofcourse). Chinese influence is evidently rising. In Suva we saw massive chinese fishing fleet and a 100 meter long radio research ship. It looked like a white cruising ship expect that the upper deck was not reserved for swimming pools or bars but there was five huge antennas directed straight to sky. I imagined that Chinese space research was utilising Fiji as a home port for their movable earth station in southern pacific. But then they must have similar somewhere in Africa to be able to receive and transmit 24 hours for earth orbiting satellites? Or maybe it was a research vessel for more varied roles….
I was in the custom to clear out when the ship left and enjoyed a couple of funny moments during the departure seremony. Like any other nationality, Chinese were proud about this hich tech vessel and there was a suffcient group of local Chinese ex-pats to cheer and sing when the boat was dragged out of marina by tug boats all waving eagerly Fijian and Chinese flags. But then a Fijian guy picked a couple of flags from the bag of the head of goodbye comittee. He was politely informed that the flags will be collected back after the boat has left – for future use. Well a bit of theather is allright… and it is hard for empty bag to stand upright!
Päällimmäinen tunne, kun aamulla heräsin oli helpottunut, mutta toisaalta oli aika tyhjä olo. Väitös sujui lopulta kai ihan hyvin, vaikka en paljon muista itse tilaisuuden kulusta. Sen verran jännitti. Vastaväittäjä esitti tiukkoja kysymyksiä, mutta asiasta ja hyvässä hengessä. Ja karonkassa oli toivottavasti vierailla hauskaa.

Nyt on jännä tunne, kun ei viiden vuoden projektia yhtäkkiä enää tarvitse ajatella. Olo on huojentunut ja voi kääntää uuden lehden.

Lazy part of Nanea crew is now at Muscet Cove in Mamanucas Islands. Island has barrier reef and complex entrance. Good place but not yet paradise – how ever we need to wait here for a couple of days to wind settle. Paradise Otso wants to find an island where no-ne lives – lets see how far we need to sail before we find his paradise island.
On ihanaa kuulla, että Nanean miehistöllä kaikki hyvin Fidzillä, vaikka äiti onkin kaukana. Valmistelut väitöstä varten ovat sujuneet hyvin ja isä pitää minua kuin kukkaa kämmenellään, hyvässä hoidossa. Matkaväsymyksestä selvittyäni marssin heti mekko-ostoksille. Mustaa juhlapukua lähdin ensin etsimään cruiseri-budjetilla halpiskaupoista, mutta eihän siitä mitään tulllut, kun ei niitä tiennyt edes miten päin pukea päälle, sen verran kummalliseksi oli muoti muuttunut.
Päätin sitten, että menen suosiolla Stockmannille, sieltä varmaankin löytyy mekkoja ja palvelua. Myyjätäti lykkäsi syliini kasan Versace -luomuksia, joista sitten sovittelujen jälkeen yhteistuumin myyjän kanssa päädyimme onneksi siihen halvimpaan.
Nyt olen saanut lectio praecursorian, eli 15 minuutin yleisluennon, valmiiksi ja haemme professorini Ari Sihvolan kanssa vastaväittäjän lentokentältä tänään. En olekaan häntä koskaa tavannut, eli mukavaa ehtiä hieman tutustua ennen väittelyä.

While Johanna is preparing for oral presentation of her PhD thesis Friday in Aalto University, we sailed towards west in the search of sun and sheltered waters. The passage took only 10 hours as we mostly had to run the engine as the waves were big but wind was light. Again we were lucky with fishing and ware convinced that our friend in Waiheke who gave us three lures is one heck of a fisherman. His red/white Rapala lure is so good that we need to keep it in the bucket in cockpit to prevent fish jumping voluntarily to the boat.
Now we are in Likuri Island which is also called as Robinson Crusoe Island. A funny resort that provides cabaree to western turists – a bit like a Moulin Rouge of Pacific Islands. Entrance is tricky as the sand moves the way that charts cannot keep up. Resort gives guidance by radio – our entrance went good. Northern reef needs to be followed until inside marker is reached then course can be altered towards green roofs on Northwestern bank. Anchorage has 1-2 kn current. Staff is friendly and owner is ex-Aussie-sailor so cruisers are pampered. Kids can use resort services for free. We will boat school, swim and wait a bit before we will move to Mamanuca Island group. Obviously we cannot wait to hear news from Johanna’s big day!
Eilen lapset tutustui Yanucan kouluun. Herttainen 4 opettajan ja 54 opppilaan koulu, jossa istutaan paljon lattialla. Lisaksi pihapiirissa oli paivakoti. Opettaja luki lapsille satuja englanniksi ja sitten sama satu Fidziksi Lopuksi keskusteltiin sadusta. Hieno konsepti! Koulu alkaa samaan aikaan kuin Suomessa 6 – 7 vuotiaina. Milja piti esitelman Suomesta Miinan ja Manun tyyliin. Rehtori antoi meidän lapsille koulukirjat. Lopuksi otettiin leikkimielistä Rugbya pikku vintioiden kanssa koulun hienolla nurmikentalla.
Olemme nyt Begassa Vaga Bayssa, koska tämä on suojaisempi paikka kun Vanuca. Kylän äijät meni eilen yo kalaan sadetakit paalla ja harppuunat veneen pohjalla. Lapset lahti seiskalta kouluun toiseen kylaan. Ukkoskuuroja tuli yolla muttei nyt ihan meidän paalla ja paikka on suojainen.
Huomen aamulla lahdetaan kohti Viti Levun lansipaata. Paatimme lahtea tutkimaan paikkoja sielta paasta ensiksi, koska siella on suojaisempaa – ja aurinkoisempaa! Joka paiva satanut tahan mennessa.

Kids visited School at Yanuca. A lovely small school with 5 teacher’s and 54 pupils. In addition there was a small kindy. Elmo joined the kids and sang along “twinkle twinkle little star” with other kids. We met briefly older kids before they went to lunch break. Lunch box included healthy “cassawa” snack – every kid are in wonderfull physical condition.
We have moved few miles to east to Vaga Bay in Beqa island. Local fisherman seem to be sporty fellas as they went to night dive yesterday night to thundery weather and told us that there is only friendly sharks. All had wooden spear guns – maybe they are more silent than aluminium ones.
Oona tells: We have been in Fiji and bought all kind of things. We went to look at the Fiji schools.then we went swimming. I saw a tiger fish. well what have you been doing.
